In a groundbreaking move, PT Lamong Energi Indonesia (LEGI) and PT Jasamarga Bali Tol (JBT) have signed an agreement for LEGI to provide solar panels to supply 900 kilowatts of electricity to the Bali Mandara Toll Road.
Opened in 2013 and costing some USD 220 million the Bali Mandara Toll Road is essentially a bridge stretching across the Gulf of Benoa for almost 12.7 kilometers connecting Nusa Dua, Ngurah Rai International Airport and Tanjung Benoa across Benoa Bay.
LEGI have been charged with the mechanical and electrical maintenance work for the solar panel project.
According to Bisnis, President Director of LEGI, Edward Danner Napitupulu, the idea of solar panels as alternative sources of energy supports government programmes on renewable energy utilization and this investment would be in the IDR 140 billion range.
The project will be done in phases with the first phase focusing on three exit and entry points for a length of 6 kilometers. Solar panel battery life is one of the most important aspects of the project so if the tests in phase 1 are successful panels will be deployed for the entire length of the toll road.
The locations for phase 1 have been chosen to facilitate security in prepapartion for the forthcoming IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting scheduled to be held in Bali in October "as well as to protect motorcyclists from the heat of the sun," added Edward. It is the only toll road in Indonesia which allows motorcycle usage.
